Crowns Q&A

What is a crown?

A crown is an artificial restoration used in replacing a missing tooth. It can be placed on top of your natural tooth after a root canal, or it can be fitted on top of a dental implant after a tooth replacement.

Crowns are constructed with an impression of your teeth, so they’re built to fit perfectly in your unique smile while feeling and functioning just like a natural tooth.

What are crowns made from?

Crowns are built from many materials, each with different advantages. Crowns are usually made from all-metal, ceramic-on-metal, and all-ceramic. Whichever material the crown is made from depends on where the crown will be located.

As an expert cosmetic dentist, Dr. Aurasteh ensures you have a natural-looking tooth that fits comfortably.

Why would I need a dental crown?

Crowns are incredibly versatile prosthetics that Dr. Aurasteh can use in a variety of cosmetic dentistry situations. Some examples in which you may need a crown include:

  • Replacing damaged or weakened teeth
  • Capping a tooth after a root canal procedure
  • Protecting a tooth that is structurally compromised
  • Finishing a dental implant procedure

When used with a dental implant, a crown works to replace a tooth that's missing from your smile. When used in conjunction with a root canal, a crown can restore your tooth's surface after the procedure to save your tooth root.

What are the steps in getting a crown?

First, Dr. Aurasteh will numb your tooth and the surrounding tissue. Then, she removes some of the enamel on your tooth so that she can place the crown on top.

Once your tooth is prepared, Dr. Aurasteh takes an impression of your smile. She sends that impression to a lab, where specialists build your crown so that it fits perfectly in your mouth. While you wait for your permanent crown to be ready, you may wear a temporary crown. It typically takes a week or so for your permanent crown to come back from the lab.

When your crown is finished, you can return to Dr. Aurasteh to have it placed and bonded. Dr. Aurasteh checks the fit, makes any necessary adjustments, then seals it to your tooth or implant with dental cement.
